Carbon Tax Incidence

Analyse the incidence of a carbon tax on producers and consumers in a market with known demand and supply elasticities. Determine the deadweight loss and evaluate whether the tax achieves its stated environmental objective given the estimated elasticity of emissions with respect to output.

Key insight: Tax incidence depends on relative elasticities, not on who legally pays the tax. The side with less elastic behaviour bears more of the burden, and environmental effectiveness depends on the emissions-output elasticity.

Yes. Module 1 builds from first principles, covering supply, demand, and consumer theory from scratch. Many successful IEO participants had no prior formal economics education. However, you should be comfortable with basic algebra and graphing, as we use mathematical reasoning throughout the course.

Textbooks like Mankiw's Principles of Economics provide excellent foundational knowledge, and we recommend it as supplementary reading. However, the IEO requires problem-solving under time pressure, game-theoretic reasoning, data interpretation skills, and business case analysis that no single textbook covers. Our course is specifically designed around the IEO format and integrates theory with competitive practice.

You should be comfortable with algebra, basic calculus (derivatives for optimisation), and reading graphs. We do not require linear algebra or advanced statistics, though familiarity with these will help in the data interpretation module. We introduce all mathematical tools as needed during the course.

The IEO has three rounds: an Economics round (multiple choice and short answer), a Finance round (stock market simulation), and a Business Case round (team presentation). Our course covers all three, with dedicated modules for data interpretation (Finance round prep) and business case analysis. The final two weeks include full mock IEO simulations.
